Which "Ten Commandments" Do You Follow?

There seems to be two different versions of the Ten Commandments. One set is written in the protestant bible and the other set is written in the Catholic bible. Let's see what the differences are, and why there would be a discrepancy. After all, they're both supposed to be translating from the original Hebrew text. Full disclosure... I'll be using the KJV for all protestant bible references/quotes, and I'll be referring to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) for all references/quotes.

FIRST COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:2-3)

CATHOLICISM: I am the LORD your God. You shall not have strange gods before me. (CCC 2065)

SECOND COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. (CCC 2148)

Wait a minute! What happened to not making any graven images and not bowing down to them? Seems the second commandment was deleted and replaced with the third commandment. Maybe it’s just a reorganization of the commandments. Let’s continue and see if the commandment forbidding the creation of graven images shows up further on down the list.

THIRD COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. (Exodus 20:7)

CATHOLICISM: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (CCC 2174)

Okay, so now they have moved the fourth commandment up to the third commandment slot. Let’s continue.

FOURTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 10But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11)

CATHOLICISM: Honor your father and your mother. (CCC 2147)

Again, the commandment has been moved up from the following position to the current one.

FIFTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. (Exodus 20:12)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not kill. (CCC 2268)

Same situation. The sixth commandment has become the fifth commandment. If this keeps up, they’ll be short one commandment by the time we get to the end of the list, unless they’ve taken the commandment about not creating idols or bowing down to them and added it to one of the remaining five commandments.

SIXTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not kill. (Exodus 20:13)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not commit adultery. (CCC 2351)

We’re still in that same pattern. Let’s continue.

SEVENTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not steal. (CCC 2409)

Well, we’re getting close to the end. The Catholic Ten Commandments still don’t line up with the exact order in the bible, but I’m more concerned about the missing commandment. There are three left. Let’s see if it appears down below.

EIGHTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not steal. (Exodus 20:15)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. (CCC 2476)

Nope, not yet. But Catholicism does have ten commandments. Hmmm…. let’s get to the ninth commandment and see what that says.

NINTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. (Exodus 20:16)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not covet. (CCC 2516)

Hold on!!! Although the tenth commandment has been moved up the the number nine position, it is incomplete! What Catholicism uses for the ninth commandment is actually half of the tenth commandment! Read on.

TENTH COMMANDMENT
BIBLE: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's. (Exodus 20:17)

CATHOLICISM: You shall not desire your neighbor's wife. (CCC 2516)

Ahhh... ok... there's the other half of the tenth commandment. So, in order for Catholics to continue to have statues of Jesus, Mary and all the “saints,” in order for Catholics to have a crucifix with a depiction of Jesus on the cross, in order to be able to bow down before statues and figurines of "saints" and to pray to Mary and the “saints”, the Catholic church had to kill the second commandment. That left them with a problem. How could you call it the Ten Commandments if there were only nine of them? Solution: Do a little rearranging and split the tenth commandment up into two individual commandments, thus creating a complete list of ten. Then you can just explain that there are various versions of the Ten Commandments and that this is the one that the Catholic church chose to use. That's the best excuse to give to the masses who follow a religious institution rather than following God. This is one of the reasons why Catholicism demands that the masses refrain from reading the bible. The more illiterate they are to God's word, the better the "church" can steer them in any direction.

If you're outsourcing your reading, studying, and understanding of God's word to the "church," then you're letting someone else lead you other than the Holy Spirit. Take charge of your own reading and studying of scripture, and lean onto the understanding given to you through the leading of the Holy Spirit. Remember, religion is just a set of manmade rules. Religion kills because it teaches you to rely on rules instead of understanding that it's by grace, through faith, that you are saved.
