There Are Two Types Of "Crowns"

READ THE BLOG OR WATCH THE VIDEO!!!

I already knew that there were two words in the Greek for crown:

G4735 - στέφανος - stephanos - stef'-an-os
From an apparently primary “stepho” (to twine or wreathe); a chaplet (as a badge of royalty, a prize in the public games or a symbol of honor generally; but more conspicuous and elaborate than the simple fillet, G1238), literally or figuratively: - crown.

G1238 - διάδημα - diadēma - dee-ad'-ay-mah
From a compound of G1223 and G1210; a “diadem” (as bound about the head): - crown.

What I found was that the word "stephanos" is associated with the crown that Jesus is currently wearing.  This is not the crown (diadema) of a King, but a woven crown of a Victor or Champion.  Of course, my curiosity got the better of me, so I had to do a little investigative work.

The first mention of a "stephanos" in the New Testament is at Jesus' crucifixion (Matt. 27:29, Mark 15:17 and John 19:2). The crown of thorns is actually a "stephanos" of thorns; a woven crown of thorny branches placed on Jesus' head.

The word "stephanos" is used almost exclusively throughout the New Testament when describing a crown.  It is even used to describe the crowns that the 24 elders are wearing in Heaven:

Rev 4:4 "And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns (stephanos) of gold."

Rev 4:10 "The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns (stephanos) before the throne, saying..."

I'm sure most of us are used to thinking that the 24 elders around the throne of God are wearing actual crowns (diadema) but in actuality, they are wearing a "stephanos" (woven crowns) of gold.

Scripture about the Antichrist, when he first shows up on the scene, uses the same Greek word:

Rev 6:2 "And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown (stephanos) was given to him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer."

Who else is wearing a "stephanos?"

Rev 9:7  And the shapes of the locusts were like horses prepared for battle. And on their heads were as it were crowns (stephanos) like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.

Rev 12:1  And there appeared a great sign in the heavens, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and a crown (stephanos) of twelve stars on her head...

So what's all the fuss about?  Why am I getting hung up on this "stephanos" thing?  Here's why:

It isn't until Revelation 12:3 that the word "diadema" is used.  First it's to describe the power and authority that Satan has on the earth during the tribulation:

Rev 12:3  And another sign was seen in the heavens. And behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns (diadema) on his heads!

Rev 13:1  And I stood on the sand of the sea, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. And on its horns were ten crowns (diadema), and on its heads was the name of blasphemy.

These crowns (diadema) represent "kingdoms" on earth.

Then it's used once more when John describes Jesus' return to earth:

Rev 19:12  And His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head many crowns (diadema). And He had a name written, one that no one knew except Himself.

So we come to the point of this entire thought process.  In all the pictures that we see of Jesus, he's wearing a solid gold crown (diadema).  I know that in MY head I always pictured Him wearing a diadema... a kingly crown, but is that scriptural? Let's refer to scripture:

Rev 14:14-16  And I looked, and behold, a white cloud. And on the cloud sat one like the Son of man, having a golden crown (stephanos) on His head, and a sharp sickle in His hand.  15And another angel came out of the temple, crying in a great voice to Him sitting on the cloud, Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth was dried.  16And He sitting on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

Why would this be?  He is King of kings and Lord of lords. Our Father has placed everything under Jesus authority. Why would Jesus be wearing a "stephanos" right now?

The only explanation I have is that Jesus is still seen specifically as the Lamb of God and as our High Priest, and He wears His golden stephanos as a sign of His victory on the cross; His victory over death and the grave.  His victory over Satan. He had specific responsibilities when He was here on earth, just as He has a specific role to play right now as our High Priest in Heaven, but when He returns, He takes on the additional role as King of kinds, and Lord of lords.

It's not until He returns that He is seen as the Lion of Judah, the conquering King, coming in power and authority, to reign over the earth for a thousand years.  When He returns to defeat the enemy at the end of the Tribulation, He no longer wears a single stephanos, but many diadema. He doesn't return only as the Lamb of God or as our High Priest, He returns as our victorious King!!!

In case you were wondering what type of crown we will be wearing in heaven... it will be a victor's crown, a stephanos:

Rev 2:10  Do not at all fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the Devil will cast some of you into prison, so that you may be tried. And you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful to death, and I will give you the crown (stephanos) of life.

  3. I enjoyed your analysis of this issue. I think the significant of Jesus wearing many diadema on His head (Rev 19:12) was that He was wearing the diadema that came from the red dragon (Rev 12:13) and the beast coming out of the sea (Rev 13:1) after utterly defeating them.

    1. Well, George, the crowns described in Revelation 12 and 13 aren't real crowns. They're symbolic. The crowns that Jesus will be wearing on His head will be real ones. Hope that helps. :)

  4. I appreciated your article on crowns. One different thought though, based on your response to George on 7/20/19... How is it that the crowns in Rev 12 and 13 are symbolic but Jesus' are real? In my opinion, diadema represents who is currently in power over the earth. There are many passages that tell us that Satan has power now including Luke 4:6 when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness: "And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish." 1 John 3:8 tells us, "He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil."

I believe the passages in Revelation indicate what is true in this age -- that Satan has power now and the final battle is that Jesus is coming so that Satan will no longer have this power over the earth. It is important for us to recognize that this is not just symbolic power, because we are told in 1 Peter 5:8 to, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." This power is real. We have a choice. We are told to put on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:11) against the devil's schemes. "The whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." (1 Jn. 5:19)

The decision even today is what Kingdom will each person choose - the kingdom of darkness or the kingdom of light? Which father will they follow - our Father in heaven or the father of lies? Which god/God will they follow when things get difficult - Satan or Jesus? And, for those who remain in the tribulation, they will have the decision to take the mark of the beast or believe in the One who is coming no matter how difficult it becomes.

    1. You asked, “How is it that the crowns in Rev 12 and 13 are symbolic but Jesus' are real?” Well, the description of the Antichrist is an allegory. He’s not going to literally be a great dragon with seven heads and ten crowns. The crowns symbolizes the kingdoms (countries) he will rule over… the seat of his power on earth. He’s not going to literally have a tail that’s going to cast one third of the stars of heaven to earth. That’s what I mean by the crowns being symbolic.

As far as Satan offering to give Jesus authority over all the kingdoms of the earth… Satan was a lying. He’s the father of lies, remember? He was offering something to Jesus that he had no authority to give to Him. Jesus created everything there was and He knew that Satan had no authority to place anyone in power over the nations and kingdoms of the earth. Scripture clearly states in Daniel 2:21 that God, “…changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.”

And again, “Jesus answered, ‘You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.’" John 19:11

And again, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1

Satan’s offer to Jesus was a false promise, a lie, and Jesus knew it.

Let’s not give the enemy undeserved credit. He’s a threat, yes, but God limits the scope of his authority and power.

  6. A wonderful article, thank you Ken for writing it. Allow me to also add that the crowns (stephanos) are also the solid key to knowing from the Scriptures that the CHURCH is the one being mentioned in Revelation chapter five! With prayer and study of this subject, the crowns let us know that the church is the one being mentioned in Rev. 5 and not the Old Testament Saints, or Israel, or the Tribulation Saints, but the church. I won't give it all away, but will mention this as something to think about: the 24 Elders have already been judged (2Corinthians 5:10) for rewards if they have their crowns (which they do), this is critical to understand. As you mentioned, the 24 Elders are wearing these crowns (stephanos) in Revelation 4:4 and Revelation 4:10. And, these 24 Elders cast their crowns (stephanos) before the throne. They cast their crowns before Jesus, because they are only victors and have these crowns because of Jesus absolute victory over death, sin, the Devil, and the world. Now, there are other evidences in Revelation chapter four and five, and the rest of the Bible, for why the church is already in heaven before the seals are opened, but these crowns (stephanos) are the strongest evidence and most conclusive in proving that the church is the one being mentioned in Revelation chapter five. These crowns (stephanos) also tie up many other Scriptural evidences for the church in heaven in Revelation five, and harmonize with the rest of Scripture. With this, I have only scratched the surface. So, Jesus is our champion and victor and the One who gives us and the 24 Elders the victory over our enemies, and who gives us, the church, the body, our crowns. Worthy is the Lamb!

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and everyone that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the VICTORY that overcometh the world, our faith.
Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
    1John 5:1,4,5

    The LORD be magnified!

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read this article and for leaving your comment. I actually agree with you concerning the 24 Elders. In fact, I've written another article addressing just that. You can find it by searching my site or by checking out this link to that article: https://souzak99.blogspot.com/2013/03/why-i-believe-in-pre-tribulation.html

  7. Thank Ken for the article. I've learnt that stephanos (crown) is achieved by a person that has conquered while diadema is achieved by association.
